Thierry Bernard Perfumer

  • Thierry Bernard Perfumer:

Thierry Bernard is a French perfumer celebrated for infusing his profound passion for plants and flowers into every creation, using it as the wellspring of his creativity. Born in Toulouse in 1958 into a family of doctors, he initially set out to follow in his parents' footsteps. However, his life took a fragrant turn at the age of 8 when he was entranced by his mother's Guerlain Shalimar perfume. This encounter sparked his curiosity about the art of perfumery, leading him to study chemistry and eventually obtain a doctorate in 1983, specializing in the refining and distillation of essential oils.

Following his academic achievements, Bernard embarked on an adventure and settled on the Caribbean island of Martinique. There, he established himself as "le parfumeur," importing aromatic raw materials, extracting essences from local plants, and creating a line of exotic perfumes under the name "Nature & Parfums." His journey didn't end there. Bernard continued to explore the world, traveling to Africa, Asia, South America, and Oceania. He met with distillers, growers, and craftsmen, immersing himself in the rich cultures that contribute to the world of perfumery. He describes himself as an "archaeologist of ingredients and fragrances," dedicated to uncovering the history, beauty, and emotion within each essence.

In 2015, Bernard founded the Parfumeurs du Monde brand in collaboration with five other independent perfumers: Isabelle Gellé, Michel Roudnitska, Jean-Claude Gigodot, Philippe Collet, and Michel Almairac. The brand is committed to a niche perfumery concept, emphasizing quality, creativity, and respect for nature and people. They use only natural ingredients sourced through fair trade, sustainable, and socially responsible means. Each perfumer in the Parfumeurs du Monde collective offers a collection of fragrances inspired by a country, region, or theme. Bernard, for his part, has paid homage to four places that have deeply influenced him: Val d'Orcia in Tuscany, the Tsingy of Bemaraha in Madagascar, Yunnan in China, and Yemen. His fragrances are like tickets to a sensory journey, revealing the unique olfactory aspects of these regions through a harmonious blend of floral, woody, spicy, or amber accords.

Bernard defines himself as a "free, inquisitive, and generous" perfumer. He has retained his childlike spirit, using his fragrances to convey emotions, sensations, and memories. He believes that perfume is a universal language capable of touching the hearts and minds of all, an art that demands sensitivity, creativity, and precision, while also bringing pleasure, happiness, well-being, and self-confidence. Through his work, both independently and with Parfumeurs du Monde, Thierry Bernard has transformed his passion into a profession and created a niche perfume brand that stands out for its originality, quality, and commitment to ethical and sustainable perfumery practices.
