Sarah McCartney was born near Saltburn beach, a unique blend of 75% Teesside and 25% Cockney. Her diverse interests spanned music, writing, yoga, and knitting. As a child, she harbored a fascination with crafting magic spells and dreamed of becoming a witch. At 16, purchasing her first bottle of Diorella ignited her lifelong passion for scents. McCartney's academic pursuits included mathematics and sciences, while she also dedicated herself to music, French, authoring books on branding and online marketing, and mastering Argentine tango.
For 14 years, she served as the head writer for Lush, the renowned cosmetics brand. During her tenure, she penned evocative scent descriptions forThe Lush Timesand self-educated in essential oils and herbalism. Following her departure from Lush, her ambition to write a novel featuring a problem-solving perfumer took an unexpected turn: she began creating the fragrances described in her book, ultimately founding her own perfume brand, 4160 Tuesdays.
An entirely self-taught perfumer, McCartney’s journey defies convention. She started blending essential oil combinations during her Lush years and refined her craft after leaving the company. Her unique approach—shaped by diverse interests and experiences—has birthed a whimsical collection of fragrances that challenge classical perfumery norms.
The 4160 Tuesdays line is inspired by the scents she envisioned for her novel, driven by her belief in fragrance’s power to evoke memories and emotions. Her personal favorite smells include roasting coffee, Dior Diorella, grapefruit peel, palm tree blossoms, and the briny aroma of rock pools at the beach.
