Pierre Aulas: A Visionary Perfumer Bridging Art and Commerce

Renowned perfumer and olfactory consultant Pierre Aulas stumbled into the world of perfumery by serendipity. Unlike many in his field, he hailed not from Grasse nor from a family entrenched in the fragrance industry. At 26, while overseeing marketing development for beauty products at a major mass-market distributor, he first crossed paths with ingredient suppliers and perfumers working on his product lines. His extraordinary olfactive sensitivity soon caught the eye of Mane, a Grasse-based perfume house, which recruited and trained him.

Aulas’ unique blend of marketing expertise and olfactory intuition made him a natural bridge between brands and "noses." The Swiss fragrance giant Firmenich eventually offered him a role managing key accounts and fine fragrances. He accepted on one condition: the freedom to work on projects for Mugler, a brand whose creative audacity and olfactive innovations had long enthralled him. This pivotal decision led to a decade-long collaboration with Véra Strubi, former president of Thierry Mugler Parfums, yielding numerous iconic fragrances.

In 2001, Aulas ventured into entrepreneurship, founding Art of Nose Consulting, his olfactory development firm. With Strubi as his inaugural client, he swiftly earned the trust of luxury houses like Azzaro, Swarovski, Fendi, Pucci, L’Occitane, Jil Sander, Chloé, Cavalli, and Balenciaga. Among his most celebrated creations areMugler Alien Essence Absolue,Miu Miu Miu Miu L’Eau Rosée,Alexander McQueen Luminous Orchid,Mugler Oriental Extreme, andEgofacto Prends Garde à Toi.

Aulas’ approach to perfume creation is anchored in his dual mastery of marketing and olfaction. As an olfactory consultant, he has been instrumental in aligning brand visions with perfumers’ artistry, steering the development of groundbreaking scents. His creative zeal and devotion to perfumery shine through each fragrance, cementing his status as a coveted talent in the industry.

Beyond perfumery, Aulas is a ceramicist who has dedicated years to perfecting the Japanese raku technique. In his Burgundy workshop, he merges his passions by handcrafting glazed candle jars and candles for Bon Parfumeur. For nearly 16 years, he and his partner Bertrand have lived in a tranquil Burgundian home with a brick-and-flint facade, surrounded by a "tousled" French garden. There, he finds inspiration in nature, cultivating an orchard and vegetable garden that reflect his harmony with the earth.
