Olivier Polge: A Legacy of Olfactory Artistry

Born in Grasse, France, Olivier Polge is the son of the legendary perfumer Jacques Polge, who served as Chanel's in-house perfumer for 37 years. Immersed in the world of fragrance from childhood, Olivier initially dreamed of becoming a classical music pianist. Yet his dual passions for art and scents eventually steered him toward perfumery. He studied art history and trained at the renowned Charabot and ACM fragrance institutions, laying the foundation for his illustrious career as a perfumer.

Olivier’s perfumery journey began with an internship at Chanel, followed by joining International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF) as a trainee perfumer in 1998. At IFF, he co-created iconic fragrances such asDior Hommeand Viktor & Rolf’sFlowerbomb, gaining widespread recognition. In 2009, he received the International Fragrance Prize/Prix International du Parfum for his artistic contributions to the industry.

In 2013, Chanel announced that Olivier would succeed his father as the house perfumer upon Jacques’ retirement. Since then, he has crafted captivating scents for the brand, includingMisia,Boy, Chanel’sNo. 5 L’eau, and the 2022 men’s fragranceBLEU DE CHANEL.

Olivier Polge is celebrated for his minimalist approach to perfume creation, relying on a curated selection of ingredients, intuitive instincts, and disciplined craftsmanship. This abstract methodology enables him to design sophisticated fragrances that distill the essence of a single raw material or a simple note. Often inspired by urban landscapes, he believes fragrances should embody the spirit of the city—an extension of urban life rather than a mere reflection of nature.

Influenced by his father’s legacy, Olivier has honed a style that balances classic elegance with modern innovation. His creations exemplify his ability to weave paradoxical elements into unique, unforgettable scents.

His diverse portfolio spans collaborations with prestigious brands like Lancôme, Viktor & Rolf, Dior, Giorgio Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, and Jimmy Choo. Notable compositions include Lancôme’sLa Vie Est Belle, Viktor & Rolf’sFlowerbomb, Dior’sPure Poison, Giorgio Armani’sArmani Code for Women, Dolce & Gabbana’sThe One for Men Eau de Parfum, and Chanel’sGabrielle.

Olivier Polge’s journey in perfumery is defined by his unique creative philosophy, impressive body of work, and unwavering dedication to the art of scent. As both the heir to a legendary perfuming legacy and a visionary creator in his own right, his story embodies the power of passion, creativity, and the timeless allure of fragrance.
