Fanny Bal is a perfumer currently working for International Flavors and Fragrances (IFF), a global leader in the fragrance industry. Born in France, she grew up with a profound love for perfume, which inspired her to pursue a career in this art form. Bal studied at the prestigious ISIPCA (Institut Supérieur International de la Parfumerie, de la Cosmétique et de l'Aromatique Alimentaire) in Versailles, France, where she refined her skills in fragrance composition.
After completing her studies, Bal began her career as a junior perfumer at IFF, working on diverse projects for major fragrance brands. Her talent quickly stood out, and she was mentored by the legendary perfumer Dominique Ropion, who helped her elevate her craft.

In 2011, as a perfume school student, Fanny Bal sought advice from master perfumer Dominique Ropion on a fragrance she was creating for her studies. Ropion invited her to smell raw materials each evening after her lessons, an interaction that evolved into an impromptu training cycle. According to her biography, Ropion’s training with Bal led to the development of a new learning method for IFF.
“We started from scratch, and I immediately understood that this job was a school of modesty,” Bal recalled of her training with Ropion. She highlighted the essential skills she gained: “I learned from him the rigor and precision to dose ingredients one by one. The art of writing short formulas where each ingredient must be fully justified, which precisely gives character to a perfume.”
Bal also explained how this encounter transformed her workflow: “Like him, I classify my materials not alphabetically but by ingredient family, from the most volatile to the most persistent. This allows an immediate understanding of the formula.”
Bal’s breakthrough came when she was invited to create fragrances for Frederic Malle, a niche brand renowned for its high-quality, unique scents. She composed several fragrances for the brand, including the popularEau de MagnoliaandPromise. Her work for Frederic Malle established her as a rising star, leading to collaborations with other notable brands like Masque Milano and Les Bains Guerbois.
Known for blending unexpected ingredients to craft complex, multi-layered fragrances, Bal draws inspiration from art, nature, and personal experiences, aiming to create scents that are both beautiful and meaningful.
Some of her most famous creations include GivenchyL'InterditEau de Parfum, GivenchyIrresistible, and MuglerAlien Fusion. She has also developed fragrances for iconic brands such as Calvin Klein, Chloé, and Yves Saint Laurent.
Today, Bal continues to push the boundaries of fragrance composition, regarded as one of the most talented perfumers of her generation. Her work has earned numerous awards and industry respect for its innovation and creativity.
