Born in 1959 in Ringwood, New Jersey, David Apel grew up imbued with an adventurous spirit, exploring the forests and coastlines of New England. His early fascination with the natural world led him to study environmental chemistry—a path rooted in scientific rigor and meticulous observation. Yet a serendipitous opportunity in 1980 would alter the trajectory of his life: a position at Givaudan that introduced him to the enchanting realm of perfumery.
His initial role in the gas chromatography lab involved analyzing existing market fragrances. This behind-the-scenes work granted him an intimate understanding of raw materials and their olfactory interactions, shaping an early creative philosophy: every perfume is a perpetual work in progress. "Art is seldom finished," he often reflects, a maxim that continues to inform his evolving compositions.
In 1990, he joined the prestigious apprenticeship program of the American Society of Perfumers, earning official recognition as an apprentice perfumer in 1991. Armed with this foundation, David ascended rapidly through the ranks, overseeing senior projects even as a junior perfumer. His burgeoning talent led to a placement in Paris in 1993, where he collaborated with Europe’s preeminent perfumers.
Living as an outsider in the world’s fragrance capital afforded David a unique creative freedom.
