In 1995, Nichols made a significant career shift and founded the brand Elizabeth W, naming it after his great - grandmother, Elizabeth Wightman. His childhood experiences on his great - grandmother's cattle ranch in the Sierra Nevada greatly influenced his olfactory journey. Summers there were filled with the sweet aromas of roses, lilacs, magnolias, and violets, while winters at the family estate in Reno introduced him to the inviting scents of freshly plucked herbs and spices. These memories kindled his passion for fragrance and became the wellspring of inspiration for his perfume creations.

Nichols is a self - taught perfumer. He combines his architectural design skills with his acute sense of smell, which he has developed over time. After leaving architecture, he spent a year traveling along the Silk Road and living in Europe, where he studied the techniques of perfumers in Italy, Greece, and France. This exposure broadened his understanding of different fragrance traditions and ingredients.

Back in San Francisco, Nichols spent a year rigorously testing fragrance formulas, eventually settling on 10 signature perfumes, including Citrus Vervain, Tuberose, Sweet Tea, Rose, Neroli Chamomile, Magnolia, Lilac, Leaves, Lavender, and Vetiver. His scents are characterized by their simplicity yet depth. Each fragrance has a predominant note, but the middle and base notes are carefully crafted to add complexity. They can be worn alone as classic perfumes or layered to create unique olfactory experiences.

All of Elizabeth W's products, from the perfumes to bath, body, and home items, are handcrafted in their own San Francisco workshop. The brand is committed to using clean, simple, and elegant ingredients, with an emphasis on being environmentally conscious. The pretty letterpress packaging is also made on - site, adding to the brand's charm and artisanal feel.

Over the years, Albert Nichols' creations under the Elizabeth W brand have captured the attention of celebrities such as Christina Aguilera, Naomi Watts, Danielle Steel, and Oprah Winfrey. In 2000, Oprah named Elizabeth W's lavender - filled linens one of her favorite things. Today, Elizabeth W products are sold on five continents, in stores across Japan, London, and New York, as well as in resorts in China and Mexico.

In addition to his work with Elizabeth W, Nichols has also drawn on his architectural expertise to take on interior projects. Whether it's designing a perfume, a piece of furniture, or a house, Nichols approaches each project with the same passion and dedication, infusing his unique aesthetic vision into everything he does. His contributions to the world of perfumery and design continue to inspire and delight fragrance enthusiasts and design lovers alike.
