Zara is a Spanish clothing and accessories brand headquartered in Arteixo, Galicia. Founded by Amancio Ortega and Rosalía Mera, the first Zara store opened in 1975, initially offering affordable replicas of popular designer fashions. The store's rapid success prompted Ortega to expand Zara's presence across Spain.
During the 1980s, Ortega revamped Zara's design, manufacturing, and distribution processes to enable rapid response to current trends. Leveraging advancements in information technology and economies of scale through collaborative design teams, he coined the concept of "instant fashions." Rumored to turn around designs in just two weeks—from development to store shelves—Zara drastically outpaced the industry average of six months. This streamlined model allows the brand to launch thousands of new designs annually, creating a sense of urgency among customers through the fleeting availability of each design.
In contrast to the industry trend of outsourcing fast-fashion production to low-cost foreign labor, Zara remains part of the Inditex group, founded in 1985 as its parent holding company. Inditex, one of the world's largest distribution networks, is central to Zara's "instant fashion" model and serves other retailers under its umbrella.
Zara also adopted an unconventional strategy of zero advertising, redirecting funds typically spent on marketing toward opening new stores. International expansion began in 1980 with a store in Porto, Portugal, followed by entries into the U.S. (1989) and France (1990), among other markets throughout the 1990s. As of 2011, Zara operated in 78 countries, primarily through company-owned stores—franchising only where local regulations prohibited foreign ownership.
The brand expanded into home goods in 2003 and ventured into fragrances in 1998, collaborating with the renowned Spanish perfume house Puig. Zara's fragrance portfolio boasts 1,071 perfumes in our database, with the earliest edition launched in 1999 and the latest in 2025. These scents were created in partnership with esteemed perfumers including Marion Costero, Honorine Blanc, Jérôme Epinette, and many others, reflecting the brand's commitment to diverse olfactory craftsmanship.
