Yves Rocher (1930–2009) was a French entrepreneur and founder of the eponymous cosmetics company. Born and raised in La Gacilly, a village in France’s Brittany region, Rocher remained deeply connected to his roots throughout his life. The company he established maintains a lasting commitment to the area, with its headquarters and a botanical garden both based in La Gacilly.
Rocher’s foray into botanical beauty began when a local healer introduced him to making a plant-based skin ointment using native regional flora. He marketed the ointment through advertisements in French magazines, laying the foundation for a direct sales model that would become a cornerstone of his business strategy.
Launched in 1959 from a "laboratory" in Rocher’s attic, the company was among the first to center its cosmetics, skincare, and fragrances on botanical ingredients, with a mission to make botanical beauty accessible to all women. The products gained rapid popularity, enabling the brand to open its first physical store just three years later.
Today, the Yves Rocher empire spans 88 countries, distributing products through direct catalog sales, online platforms, and brick-and-mortar stores. It remains one of the largest employers in the La Gacilly region.
Rocher officially retired in 1992, handing over leadership to his son Didier. After Didier’s passing in 1994, he returned to lead the company until his own death in 2009. The Rocher family continues to steward the brand, with grandson Bris Rocher serving as President.
