Thomas Jacob Hilfiger is the visionary designer behind the iconic Tommy Hilfiger clothing and fragrance lines. Born and raised in Elmira, New York, Hilfiger launched his fashion career as a retailer, opening his first boutique,The People's Place, in his hometown. For this venture, he designed apparel under the alias Jacob Alan. The People's Place grew into a small chain of stores before closing its doors in the mid-1970s—a turn of events that led Hilfiger to relocate to New York City and pursue design full-time. In 1984, he founded the Tommy Hilfiger Corporation and unveiled his debut menswear collection.

Renowned for its timeless American aesthetic, often accented by the red, white, and blue hues of the American flag, Tommy Hilfiger's sportswear and casualwear for men and women quickly gained widespread appeal. The pieces blend a refreshed "preppy" look, making them a staple among young professionals, while also resonating with hip-hop and rock music communities. Hilfiger has dressed or collaborated with a diverse roster of artists, including Aaliyah, Britney Spears, David Bowie, and Snoop Dogg. His partnership with musician Beyoncé Knowles gave rise to theTrue StarandTrue Star Goldfragrances, whileTrue Star Mendrew inspiration from—and featured advertising with—musician Enrique Iglesias.

Hilfiger's fragrances are developed in partnership with Estée Lauder. The first scent,Tommy for Men, debuted in 1995, followed by its female counterpart,Tommy Girl, in 1996. Both became blockbuster hits, spawning a long line of flanker fragrances. To this day, fragrances remain a cornerstone of the Tommy Hilfiger brand, with many new releases leaning into the brand's "preppy" and "Americana" heritage.
