The Body Shop: Brand History & Fragrance Legacy
The Body Shop is a UK-based cosmetics brand founded in 1976 by the late Dame Anita Roddick.
Roddick’s inspiration stemmed from a visit to a store in Berkeley, California—also namedThe Body Shop—that specialized in naturally scented soaps and lotions. Drawing on this concept, she returned to the UK to launch her own venture. The brand proved an immediate success, expanding at an annual rate of 50% for several consecutive years. In 1984, The Body Shop made its stock market debut, and by 1989, Roddick had acquired full rights to the “The Body Shop” name in the United States and Israel from the U.S.-based entity that originally held them.
From its early days, The Body Shop prioritized nature-inspired products, featuring botanical ingredients sourced through Fair Trade practices. Both the brand and its founder gained widespread recognition for their commitment to social activism: The Body Shop took a firm stance against animal testing, refusing to use ingredients or sell products tested on animalsafter 1990. It also became the first international cosmetics company to be certified under the Humane Cosmetics Standard for its “Against Animal Testing” policy.
The brand leveraged its store spaces as platforms for advocacy, while Roddick used her influence as a leader to raise awareness for causes like Greenpeace initiatives and the impact of media portrayals of the female image on women’s self-esteem. Additionally, The Body Shop developed its own ethical trading program calledCommunity Trade, which partners with underserved communities worldwide—ensuring fair compensation for the natural ingredients or handcrafted goods the brand purchases.
Today, The Body Shop operates over 2,500 stores across 60 countries. Notably, the brand was acquired by L’Oréal in 2006, and the untimely passing of founder Anita Roddick in 2007 made headlines globally.
