Serge Lutens is a visionary multi-disciplinary artist whose prolific career spans fashion design, perfumery, hairstyling, photography, and filmmaking. Born in France in 1942, Lutens began his creative journey as a hairstylist apprentice in Lille, where he simultaneously explored cosmetics and photography. In the 1960s, he relocated to Paris, soon establishing himself as a makeup artist forVoguemagazine. Collaborating with era-defining photographers and models, he was commissioned by Christian Dior in 1967 to develop a cosmetics line, marking an early milestone in his cross-industry influence.
During the 1970s, Lutens transitioned to professional photography and directed two short films that premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, showcasing his cinematic vision. In 1980, Japanese cosmetics giant Shiseido enlisted him to revamp their brand image—a partnership that proved mutually transformative. Lutens oversaw packaging design, cosmetics development, and award-winning advertising campaigns, while Shiseido launched his perfumery career in 1982 withNombre Noir. Their collaboration reached iconic status with 1992’sFéminité du Boisand the creation ofLes Salons du Palais Royal, a luxurious perfume boutique dedicated to Shiseido and Lutens scents.
In 2000, Lutens foundedParfums-Beauté Serge Lutens, partnering closely with perfumer Christopher Sheldrake. The brand emerged at a pivotal moment, leveraging the rise of e-commerce and social media to popularize exclusive, niche fragrances—of which Lutens’ creations became quintessential examples. Today, his fragrance portfolio boasts 107 editions in our database, ranging from the earliest 1991 release to a 2025 creation, developed in collaboration with perfumers Christopher Sheldrake, Maurice Roucel, Serge Lutens himself, and Gilles Romey.
