Rochas originated as a French fashion house established by Marcel Rochas in 1925. From 1925 until 1953, when its haute couture division ceased operations, Marcel Rochas crafted garments for women that blended forward-thinking designs with a celebration of traditional feminine silhouettes. Anticipating the needs of modern women in the early to mid-20th century, Rochas pioneered the design of 2/3-length coats and skirts with pockets. He also invented the "mermaid" dress, which continues to serve as an inspiration for women's dress designs to this day.

The company expanded its product range to include fragrances, debuting with a trio of perfumes—Avenue Matignon, Air Jeune, and Audace—in 1934. These perfumes were withdrawn from the market during World War II, but the company's most renowned fragrance, the classic Femme, was launched in 1943 and remains a consistent best-seller. Rochas was an early adopter of cross-selling, marketing lipstick and stockings as complementary items to Femme. The company's first men's fragrance, Moustache, was introduced in 1949.

The Rochas fragrance and cosmetics division achieved tremendous success, prompting Marcel Rochas to close the haute couture division in 1953, two years before his passing in 1955. With fragrances becoming the primary focus, Rochas' young wife, Helene—who was only 30 at the time of his death—took charge and transformed the House of Rochas into a multi-million-dollar enterprise before selling it in 1971.

The company changed ownership several times in the late 20th century. Helene Rochas even returned as a consultant from 1984 to 1989. Procter & Gamble acquired the company in 2003 and relaunched the fashion division under the direction of Olivier Theyskens, who helmed it from 2003 to 2006. After a two-year hiatus, the fashion division was reintroduced in 2008, with Marco Zanini serving as its current creative director.

Fragrances remain the cornerstone of the Rochas brand, and since 2008, the company has employed its in-house perfumer, Jean-Michel Duriez.
