Founded in Italy in 1996, Profumum Roma has a story deeply rooted in history.
It all began when Celestino Durante returned to his small suburban hometown of Sant'Elena Sannita after World War II. A community primarily focused on farming, livestock-raising, and renowned for its knife-grinding trade, Sant'Elena Sannita was where Celestino's journey started. Fueled by a strong work ethic and equipped with practical skills, he gathered his few belongings, set off with his new wife Luisa, and headed to Rome in search of opportunities. Celestino was far from alone in this endeavor—he was part of a generation of young men from Sant'Elena who made their way by plying their trade on bicycles and scooters, until years of sacrifice and hard work allowed them to open shops and showcase their talents. Alongside the knife-grinding wheels that honed razors and scissors, they soon added shaving soaps, hair lotions, and colognes to their offerings. As the years passed, the names of these young men from Sant'Elena came to grace the most beautiful streets of Rome, transforming from humble knife grinders into some of the Eternal City's most prominent perfume makers.
Today, Celestino and Luisa are grandparents, having left their children—Giuseppe, Luciano, Maria, and Felice Durante—the freedom to carve their own path and pursue their beliefs. Yet, as commerce evolved, so did the perfumery market, with globalization and standardization creating constraints that left the Durante siblings feeling uneasy. They sensed they were being manipulated and no longer felt free in their work, a realization that spurred them to seek a new direction.
In 1996, this search led to the creation of "PRO-FUMUM ROMA." To hold a Profumum Roma fragrance is to hold a fragment of this rich narrative. If you ever visit Sant'Elena, take a moment to pause by the large bronze statue depicting a knife grinder—for there lies the very roots of their story.
