Pierre Balmain, a renowned French fashion designer celebrated for his elegant and opulent creations, was born in 1914 into a family deeply rooted in the fashion and design realm—his father ran a drapery business, while his mother and sister managed a fashion boutique. As a young man, Pierre set aside his architectural studies to pursue a career in fashion. During the 1930s, he worked for Molyneux, and in the 1940s, he joined the prestigious fashion house Lucien Lelong. By the conclusion of World War II, Balmain was prepared to establish his own fashion house.
Comfortable designing both refined suits and lavish evening gowns, Balmain crafted pieces for the emerging post-war woman, featuring bell skirts and cinched waists as signature elements. His designs gained immense popularity among celebrities and affluent clients of the time, prompting him to expand his collection to include ready-to-wear lines in American boutiques. Additionally, he made a name for himself through his costume designs for stage and screen, earning a Tony Award nomination and a Drama Desk Award win.
Balmain ventured into the world of perfumes in the 1940s, launchingElysées 64-83(named after his phone number) in 1945. The legendaryVent Vert, introduced in 1947 and still in production today, emerged as one of the best-selling fragrances of the 1940s and 1950s. Balmain’sJolie Madamebecame an iconic symbol of the new post-war 1950s woman. In 1960, Revlon acquired the Balmain fragrance license, and to this day, Balmain fragrances are produced in partnership with Empire of Scents. Notably, the fragrance license was set to transfer to Inter Parfums Inc. in 2012.
Pierre Balmain passed away in 1982. Erik Mortensen, a long-serving designer at Balmain, led the house until 1993, after which Oscar de la Renta took on the role of Creative Director. In 2011, Olivier Rousteing was appointed Creative Director. Both vintage and contemporary Balmain fashions remain a favored choice among celebrities.
