Perry Ellis was a prominent fashion designer during the 1970s and 1980s, whose career was cut short by his untimely death in 1986.

Born and educated in Virginia, Ellis first ventured into the fashion industry through the retail sector. After earning a master's degree in retailing from New York University, he returned to Virginia to work as a buyer and merchandiser, eventually co-founding his own retail store. A subsequent move back to New York to join a sportswear company paved the way for his entry into design, leading to an opportunity to create a womenswear collection. Though Ellis lacked formal sketching skills, his deep understanding of clothing and the fashion industry allowed him to develop one of the most successful sportswear lines of the 1970s, a journey that culminated in the launch of his eponymous brand in 1978.

Over time, the Perry Ellis brand expanded to encompass menswear, accessories, footwear, and fragrances. The first Perry Ellis scents—Perry Ellis for WomenandPerry Ellis for Men—made their debut in 1985.

Following Ellis's death, a roster of notable designers, including Isaac Mizrahi, Marc Jacobs, and Tom Ford, have contributed their talents to the company. While the womenswear collection was discontinued in 2003, the brand remains successful and renowned today for its high-end menswear and fragrances.
