Donald and Gun Bauchner founded The Perfumer's Workshop in 1971, with the vision of launching a personalized perfume boutique. When the fragranceTea Rosedebuted in 1977, it achieved immediate success—and today, the majority of the brand’s products are distributed worldwide. Notably, all of the brand’s products are still manufactured in the United States.
The company rose to prominence after securing a concession in Bloomingdale's stores. At the time, perfume oils were a signature of the hippie movement, but The Perfumer's Workshop reimagined this concept to align with Bloomingdale's upscale aesthetic. This innovation gave birth to the idea of custom-made fragrances, leading to the opening of Perfumer's Workshop counters at London’s Selfridge's (1973) and Harrods (1974). In 1975, the brand expanded to Paris, opening its first counter at Galéries Lafayette.
This marked a pivotal shift: for the first time, customers were empowered to make decisions about the products offered to them. They could choose everything from the fragrance’s ingredients, notes, and accords to its bottle and packaging.
By the end of the 1970s, The Perfumer's Workshop had expanded its product portfolio to include a range of ready-made fragrances, sold at perfume counters across the entire United States.Tea Rose—a beloved staple since the late 1970s—has been worn by numerous iconic women, including Princess Diana, Grace Kelly, Catherine Deneuve, and Nicole Kidman. This legendary fragrance is crafted around a rich blend of notes, such as bergamot, rose, lily, tuberose, sandalwood, and amber. By the end of 2011, over 50 million bottles ofTea Rosehad been sold globally.
In 1987, the brand launched its Samba collection, which arrived in Bloomingdale's outlets the same year. The line quickly gained popularity, prompting the release of more fragrances under the Samba umbrella.
Following the opening of its Paris office in the 1990s, The Perfumer's Workshop began creating fragrances for renowned fashion houses and designers, including Sonia Rykiel, L'Or de Torrente, Jean-Luc Amsler, and Louis Ferraud.
Today, Perfumer's Workshop fragrances are available in stores across more than 90 countries. In 2011, the company unveiled Zipped—its first exclusively online collection. Available solely for sampling and purchase via the web, Zipped reflects the evolving habits of modern consumers: while department stores and boutiques were once the preferred shopping destinations, many customers now opt for online shopping.
Designer Perfumer's Workshop boasts 59 perfumes in its fragrance library. The earliest edition dates back to 1977, and the most recent was released in 2016.
