Oscar de la Renta, a renowned fashion designer, was born in the Dominican Republic in 1932. Showing an early talent for art, he departed for Spain to pursue painting studies at Madrid's Academy of San Fernando. Enthralled by Spanish culture and developing a burgeoning passion for fashion design, de la Renta started creating sketches for fashion houses and secured a role with the preeminent couturier Cristóbal Balenciaga. In 1960, he relocated to Paris, where he served as a couture assistant at Lanvin.
Following several years in the glittering realm of haute couture, de la Renta’s business acumen steered him toward ready-to-wear. He moved to the United States in 1963, taking up a position at Elizabeth Arden—a brand then producing both fashion and cosmetics. By 1965, having gained industry recognition through his work at Arden, he was ready to establish his own fashion house.
De la Renta’s Dominican roots, combined with his experiences in the couture houses of Madrid and Paris, manifested in distinctive, vibrant, and feminine designs characterized by luxurious fabrics and meticulous attention to detail. His eponymous house achieved instant success, earning him the Coty American Fashion Critics’ Awards in 1967 and 1968. He was inducted into the Coty Hall of Fame in 1973, the same year he began a three-year term as President of the Council of Fashion Designers of America.
Oscar de la Renta became a U.S. citizen in 1971.
His success as a designer endured through the 1980s and early 1990s. In 1993, while continuing to offer designs under his own label, he accepted a role as head couturier at Balmain—making him the first American to design for a French couture house. His tenure at Balmain lasted until 2002. Upon returning to the U.S., the Oscar de la Renta brand expanded to include accessories, home furnishings, and a retail division with stores worldwide. His designs have dressed some of the late 20th century’s most iconic, influential, and glamorous women, including three former U.S. First Ladies.
De la Renta launched his first fragrance,Oscarfor women, in 1977; it remains a global bestseller to this day. A range of subsequent fragrances for both men and women followed, produced in partnership with L’Oréal.
