The Attarwala family has been immersed in the art and science of attar-making for over 160 years. Attar refers to fragrant oils derived from extracts of flowers, herbs, woods, and more. The family name "Attarwala" combines "Attar" and "wala," meaning "possessor of attar." The Attarwala family traces its origins to Udaipur, the picturesque "City of Lakes" in India's Rajasthan state. Around 1940, the late Mr. Mohammadali Attarwala relocated the core of the family's business operations to Bombay (now Mumbai), India.
In Bombay, Mr. Ismail M. Attarwala—eldest son of Mr. Mohammadali Attarwala—founded Nemat Enterprises, renowned for its extensive collection of high-quality Indian attars and perfumes. Nemat International® is a U.S.-based company established by the Attarwala family.
Nature abounds with extraordinary sources of fragrance, capable of evoking profound emotions: joy, excitement, or serenity. We are all moved by diverse scents—the fresh, green aroma of a forest after rain, the earthy scent of dawn, or the enduring fragrance of beautiful flowers. A perfumer endeavors to capture both the essence and beauty of the natural world, as well as their own feelings and thoughts, in every creation. Each perfume is a work of art: some blends seek to replicate naturally occurring fragrances like rose, jasmine, or sandalwood, while others are abstract compositions—expressions of the perfumer’s creativity. The Attarwala family boasts a unique legacy of preserving India’s traditional art and science of perfume and essential oil making, with knowledge passed down through generations. These are products truly cherished and nurtured by a family.
