Nautica is an American apparel and furnishings brand founded by designer David Chu in 1983. What began as a menswear line has expanded to encompass women’s wear, children’s clothing, accessories, home goods, and furniture, evolving into an iconic American lifestyle brand that encapsulates the spirit of the active, adventurous American way of life.
The brand derives its name from the Latin wordNauticus, meaning "of or relating to ships." Its distinctive logo features a billowing spinnaker—a lightweight sail specifically designed for sailing off the wind, from a reaching course to a downwind direction. Many of Nautica’s products showcase nautical or outdoorsy motifs, characterized by stripes, ocean-inspired names, and a prominent use of the color blue. Its advertising campaigns are frequently set aboard boats, ships, or along the seaside, reinforcing this maritime identity.
In 1984, Nautica was acquired by State-O-Main, a New York-based apparel company, which later adopted Nautica as its corporate identity. Then, in 2003, VF Corporation—an American clothing conglomerate specializing in branded apparel—purchased the brand.
Nautica has partnered with Coty to develop fragrances for both men and women. The first offering, Nautica cologne for men, debuted in 1992. Many of these fragrances feature blue hues (either in the scent itself or its packaging), bear the spinnaker logo, and boast aquatic-themed names and aromas.
To date, Nautica has 31 perfumes in its fragrance portfolio. The earliest was launched in 1992, with the most recent edition set to release in 2025. These fragrances were crafted in collaboration with renowned perfumers, including Clement Gavarry, Harry Fremont, Alexis Grugeon, Firmenich, Joachim Correl, Maurice Roucel, Patricia Bilodeau, and Michel Mane.
