Michael Kors is an acclaimed American fashion designer, renowned particularly for his womenswear collections. Born Karl Anderson, Jr. in 1959, he adopted the name Michael David Kors at the age of 5 following his mother's remarriage.
Kors pursued his studies at the Fashion Institute of Technology and embarked on his design career at 19. In 1981, at the young age of 22, he debuted the Michael Kors womenswear line through New York City's premier department stores. The remarkable success of this line paved the way for his role as womenswear designer and creative director at the legendary French fashion house Celine. In 2003, Kors stepped away from Celine to redirect his focus entirely to his eponymous brand.
The Michael Kors menswear line was launched in 2002, complemented by two additional lines—MICHAEL and KORS. These extensions offer more accessible fashion pieces, along with a range of shoes and denim.
Beyond the fashion world, Michael Kors gained widespread recognition among television audiences as a judge on the hit showProject Runway.
In partnership with Estée Lauder, Michael Kors has ventured into fragrances. His first scent,Michaelfor women, was introduced in 2001.
