Marissa Zappas is a perfumer, scent designer, and poet based in New York City. Her approach to perfumery integrates her background in anthropology with her appreciation for avant-garde fragrances from the early 20th century. While her fragrances often carry personal narratives, she is equally recognized for collaborations with New York City artists and writers. Her ethereal, profoundly nostalgic scents blend fantasy with reality, as well as gothic elements with modern aesthetics.
Marissa views perfume creation and wear as a means of invoking past, present, and future selves. Her academic work delves into the history of perfumery in relation to attitudes toward death and the evolution of cemetery architecture. During her MA studies, she gained ethnographic training at Givaudan, where she decided to fully embrace perfumery art. She then apprenticed in the lab under Master Perfumer Olivier Gillotin, training under his mentorship until 2017, when she transitioned to freelance work. She currently resides in New York.
