Karl Lagerfeld (born Karl Lagerfeldt) is a German-born artist and fashion designer currently based in Paris. Infamously guarded about the specifics of his personal life, he is thought to have been born in the 1930s. His fashion career kicked off with considerable prestige in 1955, when he was awarded an apprenticeship at Pierre Balmain. Just three years later, he moved to Jean Patou, where he stayed for five years, designing two haute couture collections annually. His early designs courted controversy with their low necklines, low backs, and short skirts. Though poorly received by critics, the collections nonetheless established Lagerfeld’s reputation and enabled him to start working as a freelance designer for diverse fashion houses such as Tiziana, Chloé, Curiel, and Fendi. In 1983, he took over as creative director of Chanel, a role he holds to this day.
Lagerfeld launched his eponymous line in 1984, designing for it until 1997. The Lagerfeld Gallery brand debuted in 1998 and has enjoyed successful collaborations with Diesel and H&M—his collection with H&M sold out in a mere two days. The line reverted to the name Karl Lagerfeld in 2006 and went on to form partnerships with Macy’s and Sephora.
Beyond fashion, Karl Lagerfeld is an accomplished photographer, shooting annual ad campaigns for Chanel, Fendi, and his own label. He has also photographed models and celebrities for magazines and has published books featuring his photos and illustrations. Lagerfeld’s distinctive image—defined by his signature ponytail, dark glasses, and gloves—has been immortalized in jewelry, art, dolls, stuffed animals, and puppets.
Fragrances bearing the Karl Lagerfeld name have been available since 1978, when Lagerfeld Classic for men was first introduced. His women’s fragranceSun, Moon, Starsbecame an iconic and highly successful scent of the 1990s. Today, Karl Lagerfeld fragrances are produced in collaboration with Tommy Hilfiger.
