Jo Malone is a British fragrance designer who launched her career in the industry as a florist. Her lifelong passion for all things aromatic began in childhood, when she experimented with creating her own scents using flowers from the family garden and grated soap.
Working as a florist during the day and a facial beautician by night, her business gained traction when the Nutmeg and Ginger bath oil she crafted as a thank-you gift for clients sparked repeated reorder requests. In 1994, Jo Malone opened her first boutique in London, offering fragrances, skincare, and home scents. A flagship store followed on London’s iconic Sloane Street in 1999.
Jo was an early pioneer of fragrance combining. Her unisex scents often centered on a single note or a simple blend of two to three essences, designed to be worn alone or layered with other collection scents. This allowed wearers to create custom fragrances— or a range of them— by layering different scents on the skin.
The brand’s signature packaging— simple yet elegant cream-colored boxes with black trim— perfectly embodied the tasteful, often subtle and sophisticated nature of its scents.
The success of Jo Malone attracted the attention of a beauty industry leader: Estée Lauder Companies acquired the brand in 1999. Jo remained with the company as Chairwoman and Creative Director until 2006, and Estée Lauder continues to operate the brand and develop new scents. With the company’s financial support, Jo Malone has expanded its global presence to numerous countries.
In November 2011, designer Jo Malone announced her return to the fragrance world with a new brand, Jo Loves, currently available for purchase in the UK.
