Jean Patou (1887–1936) was a French designer, creator, and hedonist born in Normandy. His family business played a pivotal role in unlocking his talents: as early as 1907, he began working with his uncle in the fur trade, where he first showcased his creative flair. In 1912, he relocated to Paris and established a small couture atelier named Maison Parry. A significant milestone came in 1914, when he sold his entire collection to an American buyer—though his career was soon disrupted by World War I. In 1915, he served as a military captain on the Dardanelles front, putting his fashion work on hold.
After the war, in 1919, Patou reopened his boutique, this time operating under his own name. It was around this period that he launched his first fragrances, each tailored to different hair colors:Amour Amourfor brunettes,Que Sais-Je?for blondes, andAdieu Sagessefor redheads.
His most iconic perfume,JOY, was created in 1925—a scent that would go on to define his legacy in the fragrance industry.
