Issey Miyake is a renowned Japanese fashion designer celebrated for his revolutionary approach to fabrics and innovative use of technology in creating distinctive, functional garments.

Born in Hiroshima in 1938, Miyake survived the atomic bombing of the city during World War II, an experience that shaped his perspective. After studying graphic design at Tama Art University in Tokyo, he embarked on a career working with some of the 1960s’ most iconic couturiers. A move to Paris led to collaborations with Guy Laroche and Givenchy, while a subsequent relocation to New York offered the opportunity to design ready-to-wear collections for Geoffrey Beene. In 1970, Miyake returned to Tokyo, founded the Miyake Design Studio, and began specializing in women’s fashion.

Miyake’s deep understanding of textiles drove his most notable innovation: a heat-pressing technique that adds permanent pleats to pre-cut and sewn garments. Other groundbreaking concepts includeA-POC(“A Piece of Clothing”), a tubular fabric design that allows wearers to custom-cut it into various styles, and theme Issey Miyakeline (dubbed “Cauliflower” outside Asia), featuring one-size-fits-all stretch shirts packaged in plastic tubes.

Though he officially retired from design in 1997, Miyake remains actively involved in overseeing all brand lines. His fashion and fragrance creations often incorporate humor and multilingual wordplay. For instance, “A-POC” evokes the English word “epoch,” while his debut perfume,L’eau d’Issey(1992), plays on the French homonyml’Odyssée(“odyssey”). The 2009 fragranceA Scent by Issey Miyakesubtly references “ascent,” and his Japanese storeELLTOB TEP(a backwards spelling of “pet bottle”) showcases his entire range.

In collaboration with Beauté Prestige International, a division of Shiseido, Issey Miyake has developed a vast fragrance portfolio. Our database lists 117 perfumes, ranging from the first edition in 1992 to the latest release in 2025, created in partnership with esteemed perfumers like Jacques Cavallier Belletrud, Olivier Cresp, Alberto Morillas, and many others.
