Hermès, a French luxury goods maison, was founded in 1837 by Thierry Hermès. Initially specializing in equestrian accessories, the house has evolved over time to embrace leather handbags, scarves, accessories, fashion, and fragrance.
Hermès' perfume journey began in 1951 withEau d’Hermès, created by Edmond Roudnitska—one of the most visionary talents in the fragrance world. A decade later, the launch ofCalèche—the brand’s first women’s perfume—solidified Hermès’ commitment to perfume craftsmanship. Since then, each fragrance has been crafted by renowned perfumers, with a pivotal moment arriving in 2004 when Jean-Claude Ellena joined as in-house perfumer. As an artist of olfactory emotion and an aesthete who transcends convention, he embodies Hermès’ dedication to artisanal excellence.
The collaboration between Edmond Roudnitska and Émile Hermès (Thierry Hermès’ grandson) birthedEau d’Hermès, still regarded as a pinnacle of French perfumery. In 1961, spurred by Jean-René Guerrand (Émile Hermès’ son-in-law and founder of the fragrance division), perfumer Guy Robert createdCalèche—a masterpiece that swiftly established Hermès as a major force in modern perfumery. Nine years later, he also craftedÉquipage, the house’s first men’s fragrance.
Jean-Claude Ellena’s partnership with Hermès began withUn Jardin en Méditerranéein 2003, followed by his official appointment as exclusive perfumer in 2004. Their deep creative synergy has since yielded a legacy structured into four olfactory realms: the Colognes, Garden-Perfumes, Novel-Perfumes, and theHermessencecollection—testament to their mutual artistic alignment.
