GUESS is an American fashion brand founded by brothers Georges, Armand, Paul, and Maurice Marciano. Born in Morocco and raised in France, the siblings relocated to California in 1977 to launch their entrepreneurial venture, leveraging seed funding from the family that owned Jordache Jeans. The brand’s first jeans style—the "Marilyn"—underwent a stone-washing process and stood out with unique zippers at the ankle. As the designer jeans trend, which had gained momentum in the late 1970s, continued to thrive in the early 1980s, GUESS timed the launch of its appealing product perfectly. The brand made its debut in the American market through the renowned retailer Bloomingdale's.

Advertising played a pivotal role in establishing the brand and was instrumental in propelling GUESS to become one of the top-selling denim brands of the 1980s. In 1985, GUESS unveiled its signature retro-inspired black-and-white advertising campaigns. These ads featured prominent models—many of whom were not yet household names at the time—including Claudia Schiffer, Anna Nicole Smith, Laetitia Casta, Carla Bruni, and Naomi Campbell. The models were styled with bold makeup and a distinct aesthetic, evoking the glamour of starlets from the 1950s and 1960s.

In 1983, GUESS expanded its offerings to include men’s jeans, and by the mid-1980s, its line of watches had also achieved significant success. During the 1990s, the brand briefly launched a home accessories division, though this segment was short-lived.

GUESS navigated the fluctuations of the fashion industry throughout the 1990s and successfully repositioned itself to resonate with the youth market in the 21st century—with advertising campaigns featuring Paris Hilton playing a key role in this revival. Today, GUESS apparel is available across three distinct lines: GUESS (focused on denim and casual wear), Guess by Marciano (offering modern ready-to-wear and accessories), and Guess Kids.

GUESS entered the fragrance market in the late 1980s with its first scent,Original Guess for Women, developed in partnership with Revlon. From 2003 to 2009, Parlux held the license to produce Guess fragrances. In 2009, GUESS shifted its fragrance strategy, beginning to create scents for both men and women in collaboration with Coty.
