Guerlain stands as a legendary French perfume house with 175 years of distinguished heritage, blending entrepreneurial excellence, artistic passion, and timeless tradition. The house has consistently sourced opulent and rare ingredients for its fragrances—think French vanilla or ylang-ylang from its own plantations in the Comoro Islands. Notably, Guerlain has also been a pioneer in using synthetic materials: in 1889, Aimé Guerlain introduced coumarin to the perfumeJicky, marking the first time a synthetic component was incorporated into a fragrance.
Founded in 1828 by Pierre-François Pascal Guerlain, the house initially started with everyday hygiene products. Guerlain soon began crafting perfumes for clients, gradually evolving the business into a prestigious enterprise that became an official perfumer to several European royal courts.
Following his death, his son Aimé Guerlain took the helm as the principal perfumer. His 1889 creation,Jicky, is regarded as the first "modern" perfume. He is also credited with developing the "Guerlinade"—Guerlain’s signature base note accord, which forms the foundation of numerous iconic fragrances.
Aimé’s nephew, Jacques Guerlain, succeeded him as the house’s "nose," creating some of Guerlain’s most iconic scents, includingL’Heure Bleue(1912),Mitsouko(1919), andShalimar(1925)—the latter remains one of the most beloved perfumes in history.
Jean-Paul Guerlain, Jacques’ grandson, initially apprenticed before launching his first solo creation, the now-legendaryVetiver(1959). His portfolio also includesHabit Rouge,Chamade,Eau de Guerlain, andNahema.
Guerlain remained a family-run business until 1994, when it was acquired by LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy). The family’s direct involvement in creation ended in 2002 with Jean-Paul Guerlain’s retirement, though he continues to consult for the house. Thierry Wasser was appointed as Guerlain’s official in-house perfumer in 2008.
In June 2005, Guerlain’s flagship boutique in Paris underwent a complete renovation and reopened. Located at the iconic address 68 Champs-Élysées, the space now serves as a boutique, headquarters, and museum, welcoming visitors to experience its legacy.
