The Gap, Inc. is an American clothing retailer headquartered in San Francisco. Gap is merely one of the corporation's brands, which also include Banana Republic, Old Navy, Athleta, and Piperlime.

Gap was founded in 1969 by Donald and Doris Fisher. Leveraging the prevailing "counterculture" trend of that year, the store initially sold Levi's jeans (priced at $7 USD at the time) and LP records, targeting the youth market. With an initial capital of just $63,000, the store saw its sales surge to $2 million by 1970, prompting the opening of a second location in San Jose. By 1973, the chain had expanded to 25 stores, spreading across the United States. In 1974, the company ventured into selling its own private-label clothing.

In 1983, The Gap, Inc. acquired Banana Republic, then a small-scale enterprise specializing in safari-themed apparel. Banana Republic underwent a complete revamp of its brand image and product lines, evolving into the upscale clothing retailer familiar to consumers today. To cater to the lower-priced segment of the clothing retail market, The Gap, Inc. launched Old Navy in 1994. This was followed by the establishment of shoe retailer Piperlime in 2006, and the acquisition of Athleta—a women's athletic apparel retailer—in 2009, rounding out the company's brand portfolio.

Today, The Gap, Inc. operates over 3,100 stores worldwide, spanning the United States, the United Kingdom (home to its first international store), Canada, China, France, Ireland, Japan, and Italy. Franchised retail outlets are also present in Asia, Australia, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa.

The company has earned recognition for its quality clothing, memorable advertising campaigns across all its 旗下 brands, and its commitment to social activism. Gap participated in the Product Red initiative, donating 50% of its Product Red profits to global causes. By 2011, Product Red had raised over $170 million for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria.

Fragrances for Gap and its brand Banana Republic are developed in collaboration with Inter Parfums, Inc. The first Gap-branded fragrances were four unisex scents—Grass, Earth, Day, and Heaven—launched in 1994. The company continues to release new fragrances for men and women, and has expanded its fragrance line to include complementary body care products.

Designer Gap boasts 33 perfumes in its fragrance collection. The earliest edition dates back to 1994, and the most recent was introduced in 2013. Gap fragrances were crafted in partnership with perfumers such as Marypierre Julien, Gil Clavien, IFF, Patricia Choux, David Apel, Rodrigo Flores-Roux, and Jean Claude Delville.
