Floris: A Legacy of British Perfumery

Founded in 1730, Floris is a London-based perfumery house with a rich heritage, still owned and operated by descendants of its founding family. The brand traces its origins to Juan Famenius Floris and his wife Elizabeth, who first opened their doors at 89 Jermyn Street—offering not only fine perfumes but also a range of grooming and shaving products. A significant milestone came in 1820, when Floris was awarded a Royal Warrant as "Smooth Pointed Comb Maker" to King George IV, solidifying its reputation for quality.

Over the centuries, Floris has attracted a distinguished clientele spanning royalty, historical icons, and celebrities. Notable patrons include nursing pioneer Florence Nightingale, British statesman Winston Churchill, legendary explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes, and iconic actress Marilyn Monroe—each drawn to the brand’s timeless craftsmanship.

In 1878, Mary Anne Floris (later Bodenham) and her husband James took over the business from Mary Anne’s brother, Joseph Floris. This transition ensured the brand remained in family hands, a tradition that endures to this day. For over 150 years, 89 Jermyn Street served as both Floris’ production hub and retail outlet; in 1989, manufacturing operations moved to a dedicated factory in Devon, while the Jermyn Street location retained its role as the company’s headquarters and flagship store—a historic landmark for perfume enthusiasts.

Today, Floris curates its fragrances into four distinct collections: Men’s Fragrances, Women’s Fragrances, the Classic Collection, and the Private Collection. The brand honors its roots by preserving beloved scents from its early days, such as the crisp Limes (launched in 1832) and the delicate Stephanotis (first created in 1786), while also embracing modern tastes with contemporary additions like the vibrant Sirena (introduced in 2011). Complementing its fragrance line, Floris offers a range of bath and body care products, as well as luxury candles and home fragrances. For those seeking something truly unique, the brand provides bespoke perfume services, allowing customers to personalize existing Floris scents to their individual preferences.

In 2010, Floris marked its 280th anniversary with the release of280, a limited-edition perfume crafted to celebrate this extraordinary milestone.

As of record, Floris boasts 76 perfumes in its fragrance archive—an impressive portfolio spanning over two centuries. The earliest scent in this collection dates back to 1786, with the most recent addition set for 2025. Throughout its history, Floris has collaborated with esteemed perfumers, including Nicola Pozzani, Caterina Catalani, Shelagh Foyle, Penny Ellis, and Leslie Gauthier, each contributing their expertise to the brand’s enduring legacy of olfactory excellence.
