Estée Lauder Companies Inc. was founded in 1946 by Joseph and Estée Lauder.Ms. Lauder gained early exposure to the skincare and cosmetics industry under the mentorship of her uncle, a chemist and skin care specialist. Driven by the belief that "every woman can be beautiful," the company initially focused on skincare, launching its products through door-to-door sales. Just two years later, it opened its first department store counter at Saks Fifth Avenue.
In 1953, the brand introduced its inaugural fragrance,Youth Dew, a dual-purpose bath oil that doubled as a perfume. This iconic scent remains a global bestseller today. In 1964, the company established Aramis, Inc., dedicated to crafting premium fragrances and grooming essentials for men. Over the decades, Estée Lauder Companies Inc. expanded its portfolio through strategic launches, acquisitions, and licensing agreements, now overseeing more than 25 renowned brands, including Clinique, Origins, Tom Ford, MAC, and Jo Malone.
Though Ms. Lauder passed away in 2004, the company remains family-owned. Her sons, Leonard and Ronald, hold key leadership roles; grandson William serves as Executive Chairman; granddaughter Aerin is Senior Vice President and Creative Director of the Estée Lauder brand; and granddaughter Jane oversees global operations as President for Origins and Ojon.
