Modern-day Dzintars stands as a robust trunk with a broad crown, grown from four intertwined sprouts that took root one and a half centuries ago. The story of Dzintars traces back to the mid-19th century.
A. Briger’s Soap and Perfumery Factory was established in Riga in 1849, manufacturing soap and candles, as well as crafting perfumes and Eau de Cologne using pre-made formulations from France. In the latter half of the 19th century and the early 20th century, numerous small-scale perfumery and cosmetics enterprises emerged in various Latvian towns. In 1940, several local companies were nationalized and restructured into entities including the soap and perfumery factory Sarcana Ausma (formerly A. Briger’s Factory), the chemical, candle, and tube factory Metra, the perfumery factory Flora, and the tube-cosmetics factory Rota. Between 1947 and 1951, the perfumery and cosmetics manufacturers underwent another round of reorganization, with Flora and Rota being dissolved to strengthen the larger companies Sarcana Ausma and Metra. In June 1951, the factory previously known as Metra was renamed Dzintars. In 1958, Dzintars merged with the soap factory Sarcana Ausma, and the combined entity retained the Dzintars name.
Over time, production volumes expanded through automation and mechanization. A new facility was constructed on the far outskirts of Riga, and core operations were relocated to this new building in 1969. The introduction of new equipment and mechanization in the early 1970s facilitated the preparation and filling of perfumery and cosmetic liquids, the production of aluminum tubes, and the preparation and packaging of creams and toothpastes. In January 1976, the Dzintars factory changed its legal status to become Riga’s Manufacturing Union of the Perfumery and Cosmetics Industry Dzintars. In October 1991, a decision was made to transform Dzintars into a Joint Stock Company, which was officially confirmed by a certificate on November 7, 1991. Today, after a long journey of development and transformation, Dzintars has grown to become the largest manufacturer of biocosmetics and perfumery in the Baltic states.
