Diptyque: A French Perfumery Legacy
Diptyque, a renowned French perfume house, was founded in 1961 and acquired by Manzanita Capital, a London-based private equity fund, in 2005.
The Founding & Early Years
Established in 1961 by three artists—Yves Coueslant (a set designer), Desmond Knox-Leet (a painter), and Christiane Gautrot (a textile designer)—Diptyque debuted with a salon on Boulevard St. Germain in Paris. Initially focused on home furnishings and printed fabrics, the brand also imported scents from England. However, in 1963, they introduced scented candles to their product line, a category that quickly became (and remains) a cornerstone of their offerings.
The Evolution of Fragrance
In 1968, Diptyque launched its first fragrance,L’Eau, inspired by traditional English home fragrance recipes. The three founders’ love of travel deeply influenced the brand’s olfactory creations, with most Diptyque scents drawing inspiration from their journeys.
