Diesel is an Italian clothing brand founded by Renzo Rosso in 1978. Renowned primarily for its denim collection, the brand’s apparel and accessories are distinctly targeted at young consumers.
Rosso established Diesel with the ambition of building a fashion house that would lead the industry and carve out a unique niche. A significant portion of the company’s success in its first two decades is credited to Wilbert Das, who joined as Creative Director in 1988. Fresh from fashion school, Das was initially hired to design the men’s line but quickly advanced within the company, assuming the role of Creative Director in 1993. For nearly 20 years, his vision shaped Diesel’s fashion direction and global marketing strategies. During this period, the brand expanded into multiple lines: Diesel Black Gold (offering casual luxury goods), Diesel Kid, eyewear, lingerie, bags, accessories, and eventually fragrances. Today, Diesel products are available through 5,000 retail outlets worldwide, including 300 brand-owned stores.
Das departed the company in 2009, and Bruno Collin currently serves as Creative Director.
Diesel is celebrated for its innovative marketing tactics. It is widely recognized as the first clothing brand to market its products through video games, with Diesel items also being sold via the PlayStation Home social gaming network.
Diesel’s debut fragrance, a unisex scent simply namedDiesel, launched in 1996 in partnership with Marbert. After releasing several popular fragrances with Marbert, the brand signed a collaboration with L’Oréal in 2006. Like its other offerings, Diesel fragrances target young adults and are notable for their unconventional packaging—ranging from designs resembling a fist (Only the Brave) to an industrial spray bottle (the Green series).
