Dana is a perfume brand originally founded in Spain in 1932. Javier Serra—formerly an executive at Myrurgia, a prominent Spanish perfume house—established the company, and shortly thereafter, he relocated it to Paris. The brand takes its name fromDanae, the mother of Perseus in Greek mythology. Said to have been an extraordinary beauty, Danae’s name has evolved into a symbolic representation of female elegance and allure. Complementing this narrative, Dana’s logo features a stylized silhouette of a woman’s graceful head, crafted by renowned Spanish artist Mariano Andreu.
Dana made its debut in the fragrance world withTabu—a bold, iconic oriental perfume for women, created by the celebrated perfumer Jean Carles. To this day, Tabu remains a timeless classic: a perennial best-seller that continues to be in production. Between the 1930s and 1950s, Dana went on to launch a series of other notable, enduring fragrances, including the men’s scentsCanoeandEnglish Leather, as well as the women’s fragranceAmbush.
In 1940, amid Germany’s occupation of France, the company moved its operations to the United States.
Over time, Dana underwent a strategic shift: its fragrances were repositioned from prestige, luxury offerings to accessible mass-market products. The brand also expanded its portfolio by acquiring licenses for several classic perfumes originally developed by other houses, such as:
Chantilly(first produced by Houbigant),Love's Baby Softand the broaderLove'sseries (originally by Mem),Toujours Moi(initially by Corday, later by Max Factor).
In 1994, Dana was purchased by Renaissance Cosmetics. However, following Renaissance Cosmetics’ bankruptcy in 1999, the brand was acquired by New Dana Perfumes—a company that later rebranded itself asDana Classics.
Today, Dana Classics continues to produce many of the fragrances originally introduced by Dana. It has also reimagined and reintroduced updated versions of some beloved vintage scents—such asHeaven ScentandToujours Moi—tailored to the preferences of modern consumers.
