Coach is an American leather goods company founded in 1941 in Manhattan, New York. Its origins trace back to a business established by six leather artisans, initially named Gail Manufacturing Company. In 1946, Miles and Lillian Cahn joined the firm. With their prior experience in leather goods and handbag manufacturing, coupled with a keen business acumen, the Cahns guided the company toward a trajectory that would establish it as one of America's most beloved handbag designers.
By 1950, Miles Cahn had taken over Gail Manufacturing Company. While the company's wallets and small leather goods were already profitable, Cahn's curiosity about new technologies and materials drove its expansion into women's handbag production. In 1961, the Gail Leather Products, Inc. brand was introduced. The handbags crafted by the company filled a void in the market, positioning themselves between high-end designer pieces and inexpensive, low-quality knock-offs that dominated the women's handbag sector at the time. Coach utilized premium cowhide and developed a process to render it both soft and durable. When designer Bonnie Cashin joined the team in 1962, the demand for the company's handbags surged dramatically.
The partnership with Cashin endured until 1974, during which her innovative use of color, hardware, pockets, and other design elements revolutionized the company's product line. Under her guidance, the company also ventured into producing small accessories like pens and keychains, and expanded into footwear. In the mid-1970s, Gail Leather Products, Inc. rebranded as Coach Products, Inc.
Coach began distributing its products through mail order and later expanded into department stores, specialty shops, and partnerships with select vendors.
In 1980, the company underwent another name change, becoming Coach Leatherware Company, and in 1985, it was acquired by the American food manufacturer Sara Lee Corporation.
Under Sara Lee's ownership, the Coach brand opened specialty boutiques beyond New York and expanded its presence in department stores, effectively growing into the nationally recognized company it is today.
Coach was divested by Sara Lee and became a publicly traded corporation in 2000. Today, there are over 500 Coach stores across the United States and Canada, along with a wholly owned subsidiary, Coach Japan, which focuses on the Japanese market. Coach products are also widely available in department stores throughout the United States and in more than 200 stores outside the U.S. The company's headquarters remain in Manhattan, and its offerings have expanded to include clothing, shoes, eyewear, luggage, non-leather accessories, and fragrances.
Coach's first fragrance, the eponymous women's scentCoach, was launched in 2007. Today, Coach fragrances are offered in partnership with the Estée Lauder Companies.
Designer Coach boasts 39 perfumes in its fragrance portfolio. The earliest edition dates back to 2007, with the newest released in 2025.
