Clinique is a cosmetics line launched by the Estée Lauder Companies in 1968. The idea originated from a Vogue magazine article where a dermatologist emphasized the significance of skincare. Evelyn Lauder shared this article with her mother-in-law, Estée, and also connected with both the beauty editor and the dermatologist involved in the piece. With their expertise, the Clinique line was developed and made its debut in August 1968 at Saks Fifth Avenue.
The brand's products marked a milestone as the first cosmetics line to undergo allergy testing and be guided by dermatological insights. Today, all its products are 100% fragrance-free. Every item in the collection undergoes extensive testing and adheres to strict standards to minimize allergic reactions.
The name "Clinique" derives from the French word for "clinical," and this clinical, dermatological identity is further reinforced by the trademark white lab coats worn by its sales associates. Clinique’s philosophy centers on skin cleanliness and hygiene, with its 3-step skincare systems tailored to various skin types standing out as one of its most iconic offerings.
Beyond skincare, Clinique also markets cosmetics and fragrances. Its first fragrance, Aromatics Elixir, was introduced in 1971. This distinctive scent—recently celebrating its 40th anniversary—has become a signature fragrance cherished by multiple generations of women. Despite its enduring popularity, the brand’s best-selling fragrance is Happy, launched in 1997.
This vibrant citrus-floral scent captured national attention through a series of energetic television commercials featuring Judy Garland’s song "Come on Get Happy," which reportedly inspired its name. The name, advertising campaign, and fragrance itself resonated deeply with late 20th-century American women. Its popularity skyrocketed, with bottles flying off the shelves, and Happy eventually expanded to include a men’s version and a range of flanker scents.
Designer Clinique boasts 51 perfumes in its fragrance portfolio. The earliest was created in 1971, and the latest dates to 2024. Clinique fragrances have been crafted in collaboration with renowned perfumers such as Alienor Massenet, Sophia Grojsman, Raymond Matts, Ron Winnegrad, Bernard Chant, Laurent Le Guernec, Trudi Loren, Nicolas Beaulieu, Jean Claude Delville, Rodrigo Flores-Roux, Christophe Laudamiel, Olivier Polge, and Olivier Cresp.
