Chopard is a Swiss watchmaker and jewelry house founded by Louis-Ulysse Chopard in 1860. Established in the small Swiss village of Sonvillier, Chopard initially focused on precision timepieces, adhering to Swiss traditions. The brand manufactures many of its watch components in-house rather than assembling watches from parts sourced from external factories. Its reputation for quality and reliability spread rapidly, prompting the founder's son, Paul Louis, to open a second branch in La Chaux-de-Fonds—where the company also relocated its headquarters—in 1921. In 1937, Chopard moved to Geneva, then the global capital of Haute Horlogerie ("Fine Watchmaking"). Paul Andre Chopard, the great-grandson of the founder, took over the company in 1943. By 1963, the firm sought a buyer capable of upholding the family's legacy of fine timepiece craftsmanship, leading to its acquisition by Karl Scheufele, a member of a renowned German watchmaking family.

Under the Scheufele family, Chopard underwent remarkable growth: the family modernized the company and expanded its expertise into fine jewelry. Notable innovations during this era included the iconic "Happy Diamonds" collection—featuring watches with free-moving diamonds encased between sapphire crystals—and the first sport watches with leather straps, all introduced under Scheufele's leadership.

The Scheufeles have maintained Chopard as a family-run business, with daughter Caroline heading the fine jewelry division and son Karl-Friedrich overseeing watchmaking operations. Today, the company operates three manufacturing facilities in Switzerland and distributes its products through exclusive boutiques and retail partners worldwide.

In 1998, Chopard partnered with the Cannes Film Festival to redesign the Palme d'Or ("Golden Palm") award. It also sponsors the Male and Female Revelation of the Year awards at the festival.

Chopard entered the fragrance industry in 1992 through a partnership with L'Oreal, launching fine fragrances under its prestigious brand name. That same year, its debut scent—a sweet, popular women's fragrance called Casmir—achieved great success and spawned a series of flanker scents. The first men's fragrance, Heaven, followed in 1994. Many of Chopard's fragrances are housed in flacons resembling gemstones (such as Wish, introduced in 1999) and often align with its watch or jewelry collections; for instance, the Happy Spirit fragrances correspond to a complementary timepiece line.

Designer Chopard boasts 71 perfumes in its fragrance portfolio. The earliest edition dates back to 1986, and the latest was released in 2025. These fragrances were developed in collaboration with renowned perfumers, including Nathalie Lorson, Thierry Wasser, Michel Almairac, Mark Buxton, Olivier Polge, Bruno Jovanovic, Emilie Coppermann, Dora Baghriche, Alberto Morillas, Jean-Christophe Hérault, Dominique Ropion, Veronique Nyberg, Alienor Massenet, Christine Nagel, Amandine Clerc-Marie, Nicolas Beaulieu, Lucas Sieuzac, Nathalie Feisthauer, Louise Turner, Michel Girard, Alexandra Jouet, and Ursula Wandel.
