Cerruti is an Italian fashion house with deep roots in the textiles industry. In 1881, brothers Stefano, Antonio, and Quintino Cerruti establishedLanificio Fratelli Cerruti—a textile mill specializing in wool—in the small town of Biella. The business was later passed down to Antonio’s son, Silvio; however, Silvio’s untimely death in 1950 led to the enterprise being taken over by his own son, Nino Cerruti, who was just 20 years old at the time. Nino introduced modern manufacturing techniques to the mill, and the success of these innovations was so significant that the operation expanded to include two additional factories.

Nino’s focus soon shifted from textiles to fashion design, and in 1957, he unveiled his first men’s collection, titledHitman.

The Cerruti brand was officially launched in Paris in 1967, marked by the opening of a boutique at Place de la Madeleine. Both its menswear and womenswear lines were crafted using fabrics produced exclusively by Lanificio Fratelli Cerruti—a choice that solidified the brand’s reputation for exquisite textiles and clean, refined cuts. Classic wool suits emerged as a signature specialty of the house, and notably, designer Giorgio Armani cut his teeth early in his career by creating designs for theHitmanand Cerruti labels.

Over the decades, Cerruti expanded its portfolio to include multiple sub-lines:Cerruti 1881(a diffusion line),Cerruti Arte(a luxury ready-to-wear collection),Cerruti Jeans,Cerruti Brothers(a businesswear line for men), andCerruti 1881 Shapes(tailored for the Asian market). Eventually, all these clothing lines were consolidated under the Cerruti 1881 umbrella. To this day, Cerruti remains a favored clothier among celebrities and frequently provides custom designs and garments for film productions.

Fragrances have been an integral and early component of the Cerruti brand. The company’s first fragrance,Nino Cerruti for Men, debuted in 1978—paving the way for a long lineage of classic scents. Its first women’s fragrance,Nino Cerruti Pour Femme, followed in 1987.

In 2000, Nino Cerruti retired from the fashion house to dedicate his focus exclusively to the textile business. The brand has continued to thrive since then, with Jesper Borjesson overseeing menswear creative direction and Richard Nicoll leading womenswear. Cerruti fragrances also remain in production today, under both the Cerruti and Cerruti 1881 brands, in partnership with Coty.
