Bvlgari is an Italian luxury goods house founded by Sotirios Voulgaris in 1884. The company name originates from the founder’s last name, with the letter "V" in "Bvlgari" being a Latin classical alphabet character for "U," hence the pronunciation aligns with "Bulgari."
Sotirio Voulgaris, the Greek-born founder, learned the art of jewelry making in his homeland. He left his hometown in 1877, journeying first to Corfu, then to Naples, before settling in Rome in 1881. He established the Bvlgari company four years later, in 1884.
In 1905, with the assistance of his sons, he opened the brand’s flagship store on Via dei Condotti in Rome, which quickly gained success and renown. The first international outposts debuted in 1970 across New York, Paris, Geneva, and Monte Carlo. Bvlgari maintained a presence at New York’s Pierre Hotel for years and now operates nearly 300 stores worldwide.
While initially celebrated for its exquisite jewelry, the brand has expanded its portfolio to include watches, accessories, handbags, hotels, and fragrances. Its first fragrance,Eau Parfumée au Thé Vert, launched in 1992.
