The original Banana Republic was established in 1978 by Mel and Patricia Ziegler. Initially operating as a two-store chain specializing in safari and travel-inspired apparel, it derived a significant portion of its revenue from its distinctive, hand-illustrated catalogs. These catalogs showcased high-end, one-of-a-kind items—accompanied by engaging backstories set in exotic locales—alongside more mainstream, high-volume products, all of which were intentionally framed with a similar sense of adventure. During this period, the brand became renowned for its safari-themed store interiors, often featuring authentic elements like real Jeeps, live plants, and trees, as well as atmospheric touches such as mist and steam.

In 1983, The Gap, Inc. acquired Banana Republic, after which the brand underwent a transformation of its image and product lines to evolve into the upscale apparel retailer familiar to consumers today. To cater to the lower-priced segment of the clothing market, The Gap, Inc. launched Old Navy in 1994. This was followed by the introduction of Piperlime, a shoe retailer, in 2006, and the acquisition of Athleta—a women’s athletic apparel brand—in 2009, rounding out the company’s diverse portfolio.

Today, The Gap, Inc. boasts over 3,100 stores worldwide. Banana Republic itself operates 500 locations across the United States and 26 in Canada, with 21st-century expansion efforts extending its global reach to include stores in Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.

Banana Republic’s fragrance line is developed in partnership with Inter Parfums, Inc. Its debut scent, the unisex “Classic,” was launched in 1995. Since then, the brand has continued to release new fragrances for both men and women, expanding its offerings to include scented candles as well.

Designer Banana Republic features 51 perfumes in its fragrance collection. The earliest dates back to 1995, and the latest was introduced in 2024. These fragrances were crafted in collaboration with renowned perfumers, including Honorine Blanc, Harry Fremont, Beatrice Piquet, Irina Burlakova, Vincent Kuczinski, Jérôme Epinette, Laurent Le Guernec, Jean-Marc Chaillan, Jean Claude Delville, Ilias Ermenidis, Christelle Laprade, David Apel, Catherine Selig, Gino Percontino, Claude Dir, Patricia Choux, Mane, and Pascal Gaurin.
