Cristobal Balenciaga Eizaguirre was a Spanish Basque designer and the founder of the Balenciaga fashion house. Having trained as a tailor since childhood, he was among the rare designers capable of designing, cutting, and sewing his own creations. He achieved success in Spain shortly after World War I, but the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War led him to relocate to Paris.
In the post-World War II era, Balenciaga rose to international prominence with his architectural designs, which helped popularize the tunic dress, chemise dress, and empire waistlines in both dresses and coats. He retired and closed his haute couture houses in 1968, and passed away in Spain in 1972.
