  Founded in 1914 by Antonio Puig in Spain, the eponymous company remains 100% family-owned despite its global reach. Specializing in beauty and perfumery, the brand marked its first pivotal moment in 1940 with the launch ofAgua Lavanda Puig. The company headquarters relocated to central Barcelona, where it still resides today. Antonio’s four sons joined the business, each specializing in distinct domains: two in perfumery, one in diversification, and one in institutional relations.

  Post-War Growth and Strategic Expansion

  In the 1960s, Puig laid the groundwork for future expansion by assembling a team of talents who valued its family-owned ethos. The establishment of perfumery and cosmetics laboratories elevated product quality, while collaborations with external research facilities and integration of industrial design further fueled innovation. Internationalization began in 1959 with the opening of the first overseas division in the U.S. The brand also partnered with Paco Rabanne and founded a perfume factory in Chartres, France.

  The 1980s–1990s: Celebrity Collaborations and Portfolio Expansion

  A defining moment in the 1980s was the contract with Carolina Herrera, granting Puig the rights to create and market her fragrances. This success spilled into fashion, prompting the production of Herrera’s apparel line. In the late 1990s, Antonio Banderas—one of the first celebrities to develop a personal fragrance—teamed up with Puig, driving further growth. The company expanded its brand portfolio through acquisitions, including Nina Ricci in 1998.

  In 1999, Puig consolidated its perfumes, cosmetics, and fashion underPuig Beauty & Fashion, with third-generation family members and external stakeholders leading operations. Partnerships with Spanish brands and Comme de Garçons followed, along with a license to develop Prada’s cosmetics and fragrances.

  2000s: Modern Collaborations and Rebranding

  In 2008, Puig partnered with global icon Shakira to create a signature product line inspired by the artist. The company rebranded to its current name,Puig, in 2009, coinciding with a license agreement to launch Valentino’s new fragrance. A recent milestone includes acquiring a majority stake in the Jean Gaultier fashion house.
