José Antonio Domínguez Banderas, internationally renowned to film enthusiasts as Antonio Banderas, is a Spanish actor, director, film producer, and singer. Born in 1960, he initially harbored aspirations of becoming a football star, only to have his athletic career derailed by an injury. Turning his focus to theater, he performed with several small troupes across Spain, ultimately catching the attention of legendary Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar. At just 22, Banderas made his film debut in Almodóvar’sLaberinto de Pasiones(Labyrinth of Passion). The duo collaborated on a string of successful films throughout the 1980s, propelling both to international fame, and reunited in 2011 forLa piel que habito(The Skin I Live In).
Banderas’s striking looks and immense talent soon drew Hollywood’s notice. He made his American film debut in the 1992 dramaThe Mambo Kings, but it was his breakthrough role as Tom Hanks’ life partner in the 1993 filmPhiladelphiathat introduced him to a broader U.S. audience. This performance paved the way for future roles alongside A-list Hollywood stars, including Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Madonna, and Catherine Zeta-Jones. He achieved significant success in theSpy Kidsfilm series, directed by Robert Rodriguez, and gained widespread acclaim for his voice work as the charismatic, witty Puss in Boots in theShrekfranchise—a role that spawned a standalone feature, 2011’sPuss in Boots.
