Abercrombie & Fitch, an American lifestyle brand with roots dating back to 1892, has evolved significantly over its long history. Founded by David Abercrombie and Ezra Fitch, the inaugural store operated in Manhattan, New York, specializing in high-end sporting and travel equipment. Though the company ceased operations in 1976, its legacy was revived two years later when Texas-based retailer Oshman's Sporting Goods acquired the Abercrombie & Fitch name. Oshman's ran the brand primarily as a mail-order business, supplemented by boutiques in Beverly Hills, California; Dallas, Texas; and New York, New York. In 1988, American clothing giant The Limited purchased both the brand name and its operations, repositioning it as a high-end casual luxury clothing and lifestyle brand tailored to the youth market.
Today, Abercrombie & Fitch is headquartered in Ohio, boasting over 300 stores across the United States, along with flagship locations in Canada, Puerto Rico, Europe, and Asia.
Renowned for its high-quality, contemporary "preppy" apparel, the brand positions its prices at the upper tier of the youth retail sector. Abercrombie & Fitch also serves as the parent company to several subsidiaries: abercrombie (children’s clothing), Hollister Co. (a more affordable line targeting teenagers), and Gilly Hicks (the Australian-inspired women’s division, focusing on lingerie and loungewear).
In its retail strategy, the company employs sales associates—whom it refers to as "models"—to showcase its clothing in stores. These associates also feature prominently in the brand’s provocative and often controversial advertising campaigns and catalogs, which are known for featuring shirtless and semi-nude models in black-and-white photography.
Abercrombie & Fitch stores are characterized by a distinct aesthetic: white molding, black louvered doors, high-energy soundtracks, and dim lighting. The brand’s men’s fragrance, Fierce, is strategically sprayed throughout stores and on merchandise, creating a unique olfactory experience for shoppers.
Introduced in 2002, Fierce stands as the company’s best-selling fragrance and is widely regarded as the store’s "signature scent." The first Abercrombie & Fitch fragrance, Woods, debuted in the 1990s; after a period of discontinuation, it was reintroduced in 2010. The brand also offers a range of fragrances for women, with Perfume No. 1 recognized as its signature scent for female consumers.
In total, Abercrombie & Fitch’s fragrance portfolio comprises 79 perfumes. The earliest edition was launched in 1997, and the most recent was released in 2025. These fragrances have been developed in collaboration with esteemed perfumers, including Christophe Laudamiel, Bruno Jovanovic, Alexandra Carlin, Clément Gavarry, Yves Cassar, Gil Clavien, Frank Voelkl, Linda Chinery, Claude Dir, Philippe Romano, Gabriela Chelariu, Jean-Marc Chaillan, and Céline Barel.
