"Sånd marks the second fragrance launch from ånd. At its core lies the rich, enticing essence of Dutjahn—the ancient name for Australian Sandalwood. This term also honors our partners: Dutjahn, an award-winning producer that has worked tirelessly to revitalize both the lands and livelihoods deep within Western Australia’s Gibson Desert.
The Wongi and Martu Aboriginal peoples are the traditional custodians of this land and the Sandalwood itself. For years, they watched helplessly as much of their ancestral domain was destroyed and degraded—by natural forces, and by other far more unnatural causes. Today, Dutjahn, in collaboration with Aboriginal landowners and leading industry experts, is performing a remarkable feat: breathing new life into the parched, ailing landscape to bring the highest-possible quality sandalwood to the global market. By restoring degraded farmland through sandalwood cultivation and the establishment of mixed agroforestry systems, they have helped boost biodiversity in Western Australia—a region long strained by climate challenges.
Crucially, only ‘deadwood’ (standing dead wood, sourced and distilled) is used for harvesting. This means no living trees are felled to create the essential oils that form sånd’s heart. It is this unwavering determination, dedication, and resilience that we are proud to support—and we are delighted to infuse our humble fragrance with the purest essence of Dutjahn’s work."
