On the outskirts of Clarksdale, Mississippi, at the end of a secluded dirt road, stands a small, ramshackle church. Far from being a place of worship, it served as a refuge for many during times of poverty. Legend has it that the structure was moved to the wild mint field by hand, hoisted onto the shoulders of two dozen men. Its exterior remained simple and unremarkable, but the interior glowed with pilfered neon signs, Christmas lights, and a jukebox donated by the sheriff’s son. It was a distinctly secular space where locals in the know could share moonshine, socialize, and dance away their troubles. They called their ramshackle juke joint Saint Julep, and the oral histories preserved within paint a vivid picture of that magical place where “the smiles were always free and salvation carried the distinct scent of sweet mint.”
