For the "SHADOW PLAY" collection launched in 2017, NISHANE drew primary inspiration from traditional shadow play (shadow puppetry), an ancient form of storytelling and entertainment that uses flat, articulated cut-out figures (shadow puppets) positioned between a light source and a translucent screen or scrim. The puppets' cut-out shapes often incorporate translucent colors or detailed embellishments, with various effects achieved by manipulating both the puppets and the light. A skilled puppeteer can make these figures appear to walk, dance, fight, nod, or even laugh.

The traditional Turkish shadow play, popularized during the Ottoman period and later spread across most nation-states of the Ottoman Empire—particularly in Turkey and Greece—features iconic lead characters: KARAGOZ (meaning "black eye" in Turkish), HACIVAT (a shortened form of "Hacı İvaz," translating to "İvaz the Pilgrim"), and ZENNE (a common archetype of beautiful, flirtatious women in various plays). Creative directors Mert Güzel and Murat Katran envisioned bringing the legend of Karagoz & Hacivat into the modern era. Inspired by these playful characters, they collaborated with perfumer Jorge Lee to craft a perfume trilogy. Like the theme of shadow plays, NISHANE’s core objective was to highlight the contrasting interactions of human archetypes found in every culture.
