The Allure of Cultural Contaminations
I have long been captivated by the way cultural contaminations—those cross-pollinations of diverse traditions—give rise to new forms: syncretic, eclectic, and to my eye, deviant marvels of originality.
I recall the spellbinding effect of pseudo-Arabic inscriptions gracing the halos of certain Renaissance paintings. These works, centered on quintessentially Christian figures, bore the subtle imprint of Arabic culture—a contamination that felt both exotic and mysteriously harmonious.
Or consider those extraordinary syncretic expressions: Greek or Roman temples repurposed as Christian churches, their classical bones now housing sacred Christian narratives; or Indo-Islamic architecture, where two distinct cultural languages converge into a entirely new dialect of design.
Encounters, the Fragrance
It is this obsession with such cross-cultural alchemy that I sought to capture in Encounters—a fragrance born from the union of two iconic ingredients, one Eastern, one Western: Iris and Oudh. Together, they form a moment of contact that yields something entirely new.
Here, you’ll find the sophisticated refinement of iris butter, with its soft, enigmatic powderiness—a material that takes root in the soil before blooming into one of nature’s most lyrical flowers.
And here too is oudh: a substance born from the infection of Aquilaria trees, which in turn produces one of perfumery’s most mesmerizing and complex scents.
